Meh its "International talk like a Pirate Day" every time someone feels like being silly. I'm sure theres been 3 or 4 so far this year..

Yeah it has. I first heard about it maybe 3yrs ago, I was at an anime/gaming convention with Matt. There was a cosplay competition (dress up in costume), anyway a guy got up there in a pirate suit and sung "You arrrr so beautiful..." etc.. and maybe funny jokes. He has been doing it for years.
Turns out he goes to the same uni myself & my friend go to... or at least I did. Don't enjoy paying that much for $&%^ all learning, have to change my degree.
It is a big thing at uni, loads of people dress up in a pirate outfit & wander the corridors teaching people about the day etc. One guy last year wore the 'jolly roger' for a cape... funny as.
The funny thing is though, the guy who did the cosplay competition (and won.. several years in a row, this year he was frankenstein) dresses like a pirate every day. Also he is an acupuncturist... kinda weird.

#$@! it, first you have to talk like a pirate then you have to explain to people why you are talking like a pirate while still speaking like a pirate. too much effort
